Railcar50

Being the oldest surviving First Generation vehicle, and the only one that was actually 50 in 2004, 79018 was an obvious candidate for the Railcar50 "celebration of fifty years of first generation DMUs" at the Severn Valley Railway, October 2004. As the vehicle line up changed in the run up to the event, we were able to send 79612 as well, which provided a superb contrast to the power car. It really emphasised the work that has been put into the vehicle.

79018 moved under it's own power from the C&W yard at Butterley to the loading site in Butterley Engineering. To do this requires going via Butterley Station (left) and Swanick station (right). Note the new building being built in the centre platform,

In the yard at Butterley Engineering. This land now been sold for housing. In common with most visiting vehicles to the event, it was sent with 'Kidderminster' on it's blinds!

79018 spent the night in Allelys yard, and arrived at Kidderminster early the next morning. Right: an impressive line up of DMUs in Kidderminster station prior to be baing placed for the weekend. In the left 79018 is behind Class 126 59404 and 79612. In the distance are four Class 101 cars, and on the right is a very long formation with bubble 55006 at the head.

This was actually the first time the two vehicles had been together for several years!
They were hauled to Bewdley by a 350hp shunter, the consist being 59404, 79612, 79018 an a van. These views are en-route.
Safely arrived at Bewdley.

The vehicles were spaced to allow better photos. Shunting restrictions prevented the vehicles being sorted into a better order till the Sunday.

As will all vehicles, there were lot's of admirer's. The vehicle was started up from time to time. A small display was set up in the van, part of which can be seen here. The vehicle was manned by group members, explaining the history, the restoration and inviting people to join.

The vehicles were shunted around on the Sunday, with the trailer car correctly behind the power car. Right - admirer's inside the vehicle.

Back at the Midland Railway, 79018 was stabled at Swanick for a few weeks while the C&W was filled by other vehicles requiring attention. It was moved back down on the evening of the 1st December, seen here before leaving Swanick.
